DELVE into the North Isles presents The Chair with support Ross & Ryan Couper & Kevin Henderson
The Lemon Tree
5 West North Street
Aberdeen

The ultimate Orkney party band with their exhilarating brand of Orkney Stomp, blues and rock infused traditional music.
Combining a benignly hedonistic version of Viking berserker spirit with a formidable breadth of musicianship, Orcadian eight-piece The Chair delivers a turbocharged mash-up of folk, blues, rock, dub, klezmer and more. Collectively the sound bursts with the energy of a heavy rock gig—a rampant ruckus of fiddles, banjo, accordion, guitar, bass and drums—yet remains acoustic at heart.
The Chair formed for the renowned Orkney Folk Festival back in 2004, and has been bringing its unique ‘stomp’ frenzy to festival tents and concert halls throughout the UK and Europe ever since.
The Chair has released three acclaimed albums—Huinka (2008), The Road to Hammer Junkie (2013), and Orkney Monster, released on Hallowe’en 2021. Recorded live in the studio during an intense two-day session, Orkney Monster captures the sizzling energy of a band whose unique brand of stomp music has placed the eight-piece firmly at the vanguard of where-it’s-at.
Ross & Ryan Couper – Fiddle & Guitar from Shetland
From the Shetland isles—one of the world’s great strongholds of traditional music—comes the electrifying fiddle-and-guitar duo of Ross and Ryan Couper. Born into a musical family, the brothers have been making music together for as long as they can remember, and their on-stage chemistry is as natural as it is exhilarating.
Ross left Shetland in 2005 to tour and record professionally. Since 2012, he’s been the powerhouse fiddle player with Scottish dance legends the Peatbog Faeries and alongside this, he fronts the high-energy Ross Couper Band and still teams up with his long-time friend Tom Oakes for special performances.
Ryan picked up the guitar as a youngster and earned the unique distinction of being the only student of Hall of Famer Peerie Willie Johnson. His intricate, driving style has lit up stages with acclaimed Shetland band Vair, and more recently he’s been turning heads on the festival circuit with the fired up band, CRAC.
In late 2020, the brothers released their debut album to rave reviews—a bold, fresh take on Shetland’s rich traditions. With infectious energy, dazzling musicianship, and a deep love for their craft, Ross and Ryan are set to thrill audiences old and new.
