Anya Johnston is one of the rising stars of the Shetland fiddle scene. She will be sharing her own repertoire of Shetland tunes in this hour long workshop.
Biography:
Anya Johnston is a 22-year-old fiddle player from Lerwick, Shetland, known for her dynamic performances and deep passion for traditional Scottish music. She began her musical journey at a young age under the tuition of Margaret Robertson and Eunice Henderson, laying a strong foundation for her success.
In 2017, Anya won the senior Young Fiddler title at the Shetland Young Fiddler of the Year competition, becoming the first to receive the Hjaltibonhoga Silver Salver. She also claimed the All Scotland Junior Fiddle Champion title at the Perth Accordion and Fiddle Festival that same year.
A founding member of Fjanna, Anya has released the album ROUTE 970 and performed at the Shetland Folk Festival and Celtic Connections’ Danny Kyle Open Stage. She has also performed at major events like “Hoolie in the Hydro,” Scotland’s largest night of traditional music.
Anya’s performances extend to prestigious collaborations, including playing at Celtic Connections with The Grit Orchestra, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and Kinnaris Quintet. As an active member of Hjaltibonhoga, the Shetland fiddle group affiliated with The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, she has toured internationally and performed at celebrated venues and festivals.
Currently, Anya is studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where she is also focusing on teaching. She will graduate this year, continuing to champion and share Shetland’s rich musical heritage with audiences at home and abroad.
