The Deeside Orchestra
The Deeside Orchestra is an amateur orchestra based in Aboyne. Formed around 40 years ago, it has more than 35 permanent members, drawing musicians from all over Aberdeenshire.
The centrepiece of the concert is Gershwin’s timeless Rhapsody in Blue with guest soloist Blair Cargill.
This is teamed with William Grant Still’s tuneful Afro-American Symphony from 1930. Fusing blues and spirituals with classical orchestral writing, this was the first symphony by a Black composer to earn a place in the repertoire. Barber’s Adagio for Strings and Copland’s Hoe-Down from the ballet Rodeo complete the programme.
