Lunchbreak Piano Recital with Ethan Loch
Ethan calls the programme for this piano recital “From Bach to Ravel – The Voices in my Head”
This is a collection of pieces by composers who have been crucial to my musical journey. More than that though, they have been crucial to my development as a person.
When I was very young, it was Bach who taught me the logistics of harmony. Through the 24 preludes and fugues I learned the soundscape of music and how that translates onto the piano. Debussy added to that colours and impressions. These things that I have no visual reference to (the moon, fireworks, etc) he painted auditory pictures of. He tells these wonderful stories. Ravel is similar to Debussy but instead of a story he creates a descriptive impression.
Chopin on the other hand, is the voice of romantic expressions. He is emotional and expressive. Allowing me to experience so much of life through his music. I have such a strong connection to these composers that I consider them somewhat of a family. I often dream about talking to them at the kitchen table. We discuss many different things. They even discuss things amongst themselves! I carry their voices with me wherever I go.
Learning a new composer is like making a new friend. Their way of talking, expressing themselves, even just the way they carry a conversation is unique and special.
Presented in partnership with Aberdeen Art Gallery.
