Between Science and Seeing: Stuart Whipps Explores MRI at Foresterhill

ArtistStuart Whipps has been working with Grampian Hospitals Art Trust (GHAT) to explore the Foresterhill Health Campus and its links to the development of MRI technology, from the creation of Mark-1 through to the development of the new low field scanners now being trialled onsite. Stuart has also worked closely with the University of Aberdeen Biomedical Physics department, looking at research, artefacts, and the new technology to create a series of photographs on display in The Suttie Arts Space from 6 September to 14 December. Stuart will talk about this new work in discussion with the GHAT team and guest speakers.

Stuart Whipps, a Birmingham-based artist, whose work is rooted in curiosity and exploration. He engages with subjects beyond his expertise, embracing learning through hands-on experience. Notable projects include restoring a 1979 Mini alongside ex-British Leyland workers, studying geological thin section techniques at the University of Birmingham, cultivating Begonias at West Dean in Sussex and an extensive series of photographs at the Cadbury chocolate factory and Bournville Village in his hometown of Birmingham. He works predominantly with photography and video with occasional forays into sculpture. His most recent work The Leviathan of Parsonstown was shown as part of the 2024 TULCA Festival of Visual Arts in Galway and was his first exhibition of printed photographs drawn from an ongoing body of work started in 2013.
