With World Whisky Day approaching on 17 May, we’ve created the ultimate guide that you can follow in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire for a dram good time. Whether you're a seasoned whisky enthusiast or a curious first-timer, this plan highlights some of the region's must-visit places, complete with recommendations on where to stay and dine.  Of course, this is just a taste, there’s much more to discover! Day 1 – Welcome to Aberdeen City

Your whisky journey begins in the vibrant heart of Aberdeen, a city where granite architecture meets warm hospitality and northern character. Kick things off with a ride on the new Aberdeen Adventurer, this open-top bus service is the perfect introduction to the city and opportunity to see if from a fresh perspective. Enjoy panoramic views from the top deck as you glide past iconic spots such as Old AberdeenAberdeen Beach and much more!

For brunch, head to the Rosemount area, a locals’ favourite for its independent cafés and bakeries. Try The Cult of Coffee or Bio Café for artisan bites and great coffee before your whisky adventure begins.

By early afternoon, take the short drive (or transfer) to Glen Garioch Distillery in Oldmeldrum. This is one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries known for bold, unpeated Highland malts with rich, spicy character.

After your tour and tasting, swing by the Inverurie Whisky Shop, just 10 minutes away. Run by local whisky enthusiast Mike Stuart, the shop offers a friendly, knowledgeable experience for both newcomers and seasoned collectors. Discover a carefully curated selection of Scotch whiskies, including rare and independent bottlings, and explore new flavours and stories in a welcoming setting.

For early dinner, head to Fennel Restaurant, a modern Scottish bistro serving seasonal, locally sourced dishes in a cosy, relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant is bright and contemporary, with sleek interiors and large windows that overlook the village square, perfect for unwinding after a day of whisky tastings and exploring.

Check in to the luxurious Meldrum House Country Hotel, a 13th-century manor that blends history with indulgence.  They can even assist you with planning your next whisky distillery tour during your stay.  End your evening by settling in for a nightcap in the Cave Bar (1236), or treat yourself to a whisky flight featuring local favourites.

Day 2 – Whisky, history & countryside charm

Begin your morning with breakfast at Meldrum House, opt to dine in one of the outdoor domes for a memorable view over the estate’s golf course and rolling Aberdeenshire hills. After checkout, take the scenic 45-minute drive to Huntly

Renowned for its sherry-cask matured whiskies, head to The Glendronach Distillery which is a must for fans of deep, rich and fruity malts. The distillery is full of character, and their tasting sessions are exceptional for experienced drinkers as well as newcomers. Glendronach Distillery is known for their use of Spanish Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, producing whiskies that are famous for their rich colour, velvety texture and flavours of dark fruit, toffee, spice and chocolate.

For lunch, head into town to The Bank Café & Bar, a modern yet relaxed spot in a converted bank building, serving hearty meals and local produce.

In the afternoon, take time to explore Huntly’s cultural side. Visit the atmospheric ruins of Huntly Castle, or head to Leith Hall, Garden & Estate, a National Trust gem with history, walks and walled gardens. Whisky fans with a sweet tooth shouldn’t miss Dean's of Huntly, which is famous for their delicious shortbread and welcoming factory shop.
