Visitors to Duff House will have the opportunity to view a masterpiece by one of Scotland's most popular twentieth-century artists. Eardley was born in Sussex, but the family moved to London and then, at the outbreak of war, to Bearsden, on the outskirts of Glasgow. She enrolled at Glasgow School of Art and won some of the major prizes, including a travelling scholarship to Italy. On her return to Glasgow in 1949 she rented a studio in Cochrane Street, a poor, dilapidated area near the city centre. She began drawing and painting the street children there, remarking: ‘I like the friendliness of the back streets. Life is at its most uninhibited here.’ Street Children is an early work from this period. It was first exhibited in 1951, the year she discovered the fishing village of Catterline, south of Aberdeen and will now feature at our very own Duff House until March 2022.
