Sail into summer at the Portsoy Boat Festival
11 June 2025
Each summer, the picturesque coastal town of Portsoy in Aberdeenshire transforms into a vibrant hub of music, maritime culture and community spirit during The Scottish Traditional Boat Festival. Set for 27 - 29 June 2025, this beloved event is a dynamic celebration of Scotland’s rich seafaring past, and a perfect weekend escape for history buffs, families and anyone who loves the sea.
A festival with deep roots
Founded in 1993 to restore the historic 17th-century harbour, the festival has grown into a cornerstone of Scotland’s cultural calendar. It brings together traditional boat enthusiasts, crafters, musicians and foodies for a weekend brimming with nostalgia, storytelling and hands-on heritage. At its heart, the event honours the craftsmanship and community ties that shaped coastal life in Scotland.
What to see and do
From sleek heritage vessels to lovingly restored fishing boats, the harbour comes alive with a fleet of traditional wooden boats. Visitors can explore the decks, chat with boat builders and even see maritime skills in action through riveting demonstrations of ropework, sail-making and woodworking.
Live folk music, pipe bands and sea shanties fill the air, while dance troupes and storytellers add layers of Scottish tradition. Along the harbour front, you'll find local produce, artisan craft stalls and a tempting array of seafood dishes served street food style. And don't forget no visit is complete without a scoop of famous Portsoy Ice Cream being a must-try!
Meet the makers
One of the most engaging parts of the festival is the chance to connect with the people behind the traditions. Artisans, crafters and boatbuilders share their knowledge and passion for everything from fiddle-making to wool-spinning and blacksmithing. It’s a rare chance to step into living history and learn directly from those keeping Scotland’s traditional skills alive.
Soak up the scenery
Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Moray Firth, Portsoy’s rugged coastline, charming harbour and historic buildings offer endless photo opportunities. Take a coastal walk, spot dolphins in the bay or simply relax with a view of the sea and a bowl of Cullen skink. Portsoy is also renowned for its marble – polished red and green serpentine – which has been used in grand mansions and castles all over the world; most notably the Palace of Versailles!
Planning your visit
Portsoy is easily accessible by car, taking just over an hour from Aberdeen, with well-signposted routes, on-site parking and shuttle services from nearby villages. Alternatively, visitors can hop on the Stagecoach #35 bus from Aberdeen to Elgin, which stops in Portsoy. The journey takes around 2.5 hours but the scenic views along the way make it a relaxing and picturesque start to your festival weekend.
For accommodation, consider booking early. B&Bs, self-catering cottages and nearby campsites fill quickly. Many festival-goers make a full weekend of it, with plenty of family-friendly activities like storytelling tents, craft workshops and sailing sessions for kids. The event site is accessible and stroller-friendly, with facilities for visitors with limited mobility.
