Discover Dark Sky Week in Aberdeen & Aberdeenshire
21 April 2025
Dark Sky Week, taking place from 21 – 28 April, is a global initiative designed to raise awareness about the impact of light pollution and encourage communities to appreciate the wonders of the night sky. It’s a perfect opportunity to step outside, look up and marvel at the stars in all their glory. In Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, we are fortunate to have some of the most stunning dark sky locations in the UK, offering incredible stargazing opportunities.

Why does Dark Sky Week matter?
Light pollution not only dims our view of the stars but also disrupts wildlife and affects human health. Dark Sky Week encourages people to recognise the importance of natural darkness and take steps to reduce light pollution, making it easier for everyone to enjoy the beauty of our dark skies.
How to take part in Dark Sky Week
- Stargaze locally: Visit some of Aberdeenshire’s renowned dark sky spots, such as Glen Tanar or Loch Muick who both provide a tranquil setting away from light pollution, perfect for night sky viewing.
- Turn off unnecessary lights: Minimising outdoor lighting at night helps reduce light pollution and improves your view of the stars.
- Host a star party: Gather friends and family for a stargazing evening. Bring a telescope or binoculars, and enjoy spotting constellations and planets. Check out some top stargazing tips for beginners from skilled astronomer Garry Cormack.
- Support dark sky efforts: Advocate for responsible outdoor lighting in your community and support local dark sky initiatives. Educate friends, family and community members about light pollution and its effects on wildlife, human health and stargazing. Discover the steps you can take here.
