Queer Folks’ Tales is a hugely popular, 5 star rated LGBTQ+ storytelling show that’s been running at the Scottish Storytelling Theatre on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile since October 2021. With new Creative Scotland funding, these sell-out Queer Folks’ Tales shows are going Scotland-wide, featuring local LGBTQ+ storytellers in Aberdeen, Glasgow & Inverness.

Queer storytellers from around Scotland share stories of LGBTQ+ lives, past, present and future. Sometimes hilarious, often moving, occasionally shocking, always authentic, the mix of stories is as varied as the storytellers we invite. Household names feature alongside new and diverse queer storytellers from the different communities of Scotland. Every Queer Folks’ Tales (QFT) evening includes true stories of LGBTQ+ experience in Scotland today. QFT is hosted by Edinburgh’s Turan Ali, producer of BBC drama and comedy. He is joined by a different line up of local queer storytellers for each show.

Past shows have included “queen of crime” novelist Val McDermid, book of the year awardwinner Ely Percy, Saltire award-winner poet Janette Ayachi and BBC Radio Scotland Singer/Songwriter of the Year Mike McKenzie. Our LGBTQ+ storytellers might be writers, comedians, poets, singer-songwriters, journalists, directors, novelists, drag performers, actors, theatre-makers and more. Each storyteller delivers 2 stories, one per half of the show.

We also get true “micro” stories written by the audience during the interval which we read out in the second half. The shows are wonderfully entertaining, vibrant, community-building events of shared confessions from performers and audiences. Queer Folks’ Tales has a very loyal following in Edinburgh, and is destined to be equally popular as they are rolled out across Scotland.
