Where to grab a pancake stack
5 March 2019
When Shrove Tuesday lands I spend the whole day dreaming of the places that I’ve enjoyed great pancakes in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. From towering fluffy stacks topped with bacon and lashings of maple syrup to wafer thin crepes rolled with strawberries and cream (yum!), I would happily devour pancakes all day.
If you too have a craving for pancakes today, here are my top spots to grab stack on Shrove Tuesday and all year round:
Kick start your day with a nutritional punch at the quirky FoodStory, known for a menu that’s filled with happy, ethical and organic food. Aberdeen’s first vegan café plates up Superfood Granola Pancakes loaded with nuts fruit, dairy free yoghurt all topped with natural syrup.
Visit the award-winning cave bar at Meldrum House hotel and try the new 1236 menu. Creative dishes populate the menu and Walter’s Pancakes with bacon or blueberries and cream will make you melt.
I might be breaking the rules by suggesting a waffle option… but BrewDog serve up a fiery plate that’s too good to ignore. Topped with fried chicken, maple syrup and hot sauce this option will keep you going before a tour of the brewery DogTap HQ or even a tour of Aberdeen city centre.
For American pancakes that taste like they’ve come straight from the big apple, Corner Tree Café is your spot. You can get golden waffles here too with a variety of toppings, my favourite is the smoked salmon and pesto.
The stretching beach esplanade is home to the bustling nautical café of The Pier which promises a loaded plate of pancakes. The Pier Ultimate Breakfast serves up a full Scottish breakfast with the addition of BBQ pulled pork with pancakes and syrup. Arrive hungry, this order isn’t for the faint hearted.
