A Summer of Unmissable Events

The North-east is a hub for non-stop entertainment all year round – and this summer will be no different! June kicks off with The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations that will be occurring throughout Royal Deeside and beyond. This month also welcomes the return of the sensational street-art festival ‘Nuart’ – prepare yourself for more jaw-dropping artworks that’ll leave you speechless.

There are even more events forthcoming sure to please history buffs, music lovers, and foodies, so enjoy this quick guide to the fun-filled schedule coming to Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee 2022 – Thursday 2 June

A special, royal occasion like no other, Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of service! You can join in the festivities over the four-day bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 June.

There's an array of events occurring throughout the region that commemorate this historic reign, including a ‘Jubilee Afternoon Tea’ at Aberdeen Art Gallery, a special beacon event at Dunnottar Castle, and – who could forget – a ‘Corgis on the Lawn’ event at Balmoral Castle where 70 Pembroke Welsh and Cardigan Welsh Corgis will meet for possibly one of the best photos ever taken?

Taste of Grampian – Saturday 4 June

One for the foodies, P&J Live will be welcoming celebrity chefs The Hairy Bikers and James Martin, along with local chefs and producers, to the Taste of Grampian Food & Drink Festival. The biggest of its kind in the North-east, this event is sure to fulfil the appetite of attendees with delicious dishes, intricate demonstrations, wine and gin tastings, and much more.

Nuart – Thursday 9 to Sunday 12 June

The beloved festival returns to Aberdeen’s city-centre, promising new and meaningful artworks that will transform the buildings, walls, and blank spaces we pass every day. Incorporating the theme of ‘reconnecting’, the festival will also hold walking tours, art workshops, exclusive film screenings, and more!

Scottish Traditional Boat Festival – Saturday 18 to Sunday 19 June

Sure to make waves as it returns as a live event in Portsoy for the first time since 2019, the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival celebrates seafaring heritage through a packed weekend of fun activities, food and drink, music and dance, crafts, and so much more.

Umbrella Project – Saturday 25 to Sunday 26 June

Colourful umbrella installations are on their way to Aberdeen this summer! The project, helmed by the ADHD Foundation, aims to raise awareness and celebrate the ‘umbrella’ term of neurodiversity, including ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyspraxia.

Two displays will grace the streets of Aberdeen at Shiprow and Bon-Accord Terrace, where there will also be a special launch weekend including dance and musical performances.

The Book of Deer – Saturday 2 July

Tying in with VisitScotland’s Year of Stories, the astonishing 10th century Book of Deer illuminated manuscript is returning to the North-east for the first time in over 1,000 years and will be on display at Aberdeen Art Gallery for a limited time.

Thought to be Scotland’s oldest surviving manuscript, the Book of Deer has a fascinating story behind it that’s well worth discovering. As well as the exhibition, there is a packed programme of activities taking place until October supporting the Book of Deer’s return including an archaeological dig.
