Waterstones Aberdeen in collaboration with The Tivoli Theatre We are thrilled to be welcoming the Scottish tennis legend, devoted campaigner and household name Judy Murray MBE to Aberdeen, for an evening of conversation celebrating the publication of her uplifting, debut fiction novel ‘The Wild Card’. Telling a fresh and aspirational story about how it’s never too late to follow your dreams, ‘The Wild Card’ is an utterly gripping debut full of twists, turns and – of course – tennis! Judy will join us to discuss her experience of putting pen to paper to write her first novel, as well as sharing the process of drawing on her own experience as a former tennis champion to capture the unique and compelling atmosphere of Wimbledon for readers. ‘The stakes are raised, and this time nothing – and no one – is going to stand in her way. But, could the greatest comeback of all time destroy everything she’s sacrificed to protect? Twenty years ago, Abigail Patterson put her promising tennis career on hold to have her baby son, Robbie. But after a wild card entry to Wimbledon, she suddenly finds herself swept up in a world she thought she’d left behind – and against all odds, she’s winning! Yet as those long-buried dreams of lifting the sparkling silver trophy on centre court inch closer, Abi knows that it’s only a matter of time before the press start digging into her past and uncover the secret she’s kept hidden for so long.’ This event will be followed by a Book Signing. Judy Murray is a former Scottish international tennis player with 64 national titles to her name. She became Scottish National Coach in 1995, the same year that she became the first woman to pass the Lawn Tennis Association’s Performance Coach Award. She initiated the Scottish National Development Schools programme targeting 20 kids age 8 to 11, which ultimately produced four Davis Cup players and one Fed Cup player, including her Grand-Slam-winning sons, Jamie and Andy. Judy is a powerful voice in the battle for equality of opportunity for women in sport and was awarded an OBE for services to tennis, women in sport and charity. In 2011, Judy was appointed Captain of the British Fed Cup and has used this role to grow the profile and numbers in women’s tennis as well as increase and improve the female coach workforce. Judy has developed several initiatives including Miss-Hits – a fun, starter tennis programme for girls age 5-8 and Tennis on the Road – a mobile outreach programme which takes tennis into areas of Scotland where the sport doesn’t exist. Alongside her tennis and coaching achievements, Judy was a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing in 2014, a Costa Book Award judge in 2021 and made her debut at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2022. Her memoir, ‘Knowing the Score’, was a Sunday Times bestseller and nominated for Sports Book of the Year. ‘The Wild Card’ is her first novel.
