The Testament of Alexander Jaffray
2023 marks the 350th anniversary of the death of Alexander Jaffray. Born in 1614 to a prominent Aberdeen family, Jaffray was twice Provost
of Aberdeen and representative of the burgh in the Scottish Parliament. The manuscript, which was acquired in 2022 by Aberdeen City & Aberdeenshire Archives with support from the National Fund for Acquisitions and the Friends of the National Libraries, is thought to have been transcribed in 1673, shortly after Jaffray’s death. This rare and important document provides a fascinating insight into Jaffray’s faith following his conversion to Quakerism, at a time of religious persecution and political upheaval.
