The Scottish Portrait Awards were launched in 2017 and have grown in stature ever since. We are delighted that in 2022 the Scottish Portrait Awards exhibition will be brought to northern audiences for the first time, and be on show at Duff House from Friday 14 October 2022 until Sunday 26 February 2023. The Scottish Portrait Awards or SPAs are open to anyone over 16 years born, living or studying in Scotland. Substantial cash prizes are awarded with £5000 for the SPA in Fine Art, and £3,000 for the Richard Coward SPA in Photography, - which is the biggest photography award in Scotland. Young Fine Artist and Young Photographer Awards of £500 are given to the top entries by anyone aged 16 to 25 years. The exhibition coming to Duff House will be diverse including work in oil, acrylics, watercolour, pencil, crayon and sculpture in the fine art section, contrasting strongly with the black and white portraits in the photography exhibition. The exhibition will include this year's prizewinners, to be announced in Edinburgh on Wednesday 7 September. The judging panel for the Scottish Portrait Award in Fine Art is chaired by the highly acclaimed contemporary artist Gordon Mitchell and includes Imogen Gibbon, deputy director of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, gallery owner Roger Billcliffe, award-winning portrait artist Helen Wilson and Calum Stevenson, winner of the 2021 Sky Arts Portrait Arts of the Year. Gordon is also the overall director of the Scottish Portrait Awards. Judges for the Richard Coward Award in Photography, include Siobhan Coward, who founded and funds the award, Ben Harman, the Director of Stills Photographic Gallery. Rachel Nordstrom who is the photographic collections manager at the University of St Andrews Library and professional photographer Simon Murphy who was also last year’s Richard Coward Award winner. The Scottish Portrait Awards is run by experienced volunteers supported by the Scottish Arts Trust. The visit of the exhibition to Duff House is made possible through generous sponsorship from the William Grant foundation. Entries for the 2023 Scottish Portrait Awards will be open from 1 January 2023 until 30 April. Access update: The second part of the exhibition on the third floor will not be accessible during guided tours. Visitors wishing to see both parts of the exhibition are advised to buy tickets for the afternoon 'free flow' access. The tour ticket allows access to the full exhibition in the afternoon.
