Masterclass : Dyeing the Tartan with Carole Keepax
In this full day masterclass, participants will have the opportunity to explore traditional natural dyes, which were once used to produce the rich and varied colours in the production of tartan, before the introduction of synthetic dyes in the mid 19th century. Learn how to dye red, blue and yellow and then how to combine these to produce various purples, greens and black. All materials will be supplied. Please bring a packed lunch for our break.
Your tutor Carole Keepax started out as an environmental archaeologist, with a fascination and appreciationof Scottish traditions. Her own practice of ‘natural dyeing’came about once she joined the Grampian Guild of Weavers,Spinners and Dyers. Since then, she has completed a ‘Hundred Dye Project’, making samples from all the Scottish plants traditionally used as dyes. Carole believes that we can learn a lot from the knowledge of the past, taking it forward into modern applications.
This workshop is part of FOLD’s Monthly Craft Series. In July & August, we are celebrating "Natural Elements” through a variety of activities. Follow FOLD on Facebook and Instagram for more information.
