Chamber Concert: Beethoven and Debussy -- Gina McCormack (violin) and Nigel Clayton (piano)
Classical recital by violinist Gina McCormack and pianist Nigel Clayton for the Haddo Arts Festival digital programme.
An hour of violin and piano music by the long established pairing of violinist Gina McCormack and pianist Nigel Clayton.
The recital begins with the first of three romances composed by Clara Schumann in memory of her husband, Robert, who died tragically young. They follow this with Beethoven’s Sonata in D op 12 No 1. Still under the influence of his classical masters Haydn and Mozart, this early work is a joyous piece with asking as much virtuosity from the piano as from the violin.
Debussy’s Violin Sonata, his last composition, pays homage to Couperin and Rameau, the great composers of the 18th century. Throughout the Sonata’s three contrasting movements both players are in perfect balance with each other, playing an equal part in the musical discussion.
Gina and Nigel finish their recital with three well known and popular pieces by Kreisler.
