Dr William Napier discusses the decorative plasterwork that covers Scotland's great houses and how to repair and conserve them.

Scotland’s great houses and civic buildings house remarkable plasterwork treasures. Over centuries, the powerful and wealthy used plasterwork to enliven interiors, but also express their political and ideological outlooks and show off their wealth and prestige. This plasterwork can be a great source of historical information, and provides tangible evidence of well informed patrons and artisans.
What survives is increasingly at risk. The skills needed to repair and conserve decorative plasterwork schemes are slowly dying out.
William’s presentation will cover the development of decorative plasterwork from the mid-16th century to the present day and highlight appropriate repair. William is Chartered Building Surveyor and RICS accredited Historic Building Professional with over twenty years’ professional experience in building conservation. Following a decorative plastering apprenticeship with L. Grandison and Son in Peebles, he went on to train as a building surveyor and completed a two-year post-graduate conservation fellowship with Historic Scotland before working at the Scottish Lime Centre Trust. A Lead Surveyor at the National Trust for Scotland he oversaw the repair and maintenance of some of Scotland’s most significant historic buildings.
He is now a Director with Adams Napier Partnership, a Chartered Building Surveying Practice specialising in building conservation, research and training. William is a regular speaker at conferences and events, and in 2011 completed a Ph.D, ‘Kinship and Politics in the Art of Decoration’, a study of Scottish Renaissance decorative plasterwork and interiors.
This lecture will be of interest to building professionals, professional agents, property owners, planners, students and anyone with an interest in historic buildings. It will provide an excellent opportunity to consolidate and develop greater understanding of traditionally constructed buildings and network with professionals in this specialist field.
