Touring routes and trails
If you wish to see as much of the region as possible in a short space of time, or just love a good old road trip, we recommend you follow one of our many touring routes and trails.
The newest kid of the block and “ultimate road trip”, is making its mark following in the footsteps of other major Scottish touring routes. The North East 250 will take you on a journey of local discovery through our famous Granite City, into the depths of the Cairngorms National Park and along some of our 165 miles of coastline.
Speaking of coast, we have our own Coastal Trail too. Take a trip along a pre-planned route making sure you see and experience as much of this extensive rugged coastline as possible. Visit film-famous castles, historic fishing villages, explore wide sandy expanses and great dunes as well as go on dolphin cruises and other must-do activities.
For history buffs, our Castle Trail is essential. Known as Scotland’s Castle Country, Aberdeenshire is home to some of the UK’s most famous castles. Discover 19 of the region’s dramatic castles on this trail, including Balmoral Castle, the summer residence of the Royal Family, and the legendary Dunnottar Castle.
Our routes don’t just cover Aberdeenshire, there’s plenty to be discovered in the city too. Vibrant street art is set amongst the sparkling granite buildings on walls and within doorways all around the heart of the city, capturing the imagination of spectators. Over the past two years, our city centre has been injected with colour from Nuart and the Painted Doors project, adding thought-provoking displays creating a route like no other.
Discover our local malts by visiting our eight working distilleries along with exploring lost distilleries that are no longer operational but have produced whiskies that are highly sought after by connoisseurs and collectors all over the world.
