Fyvie Castle, Garden & Estate
Fyvie Castle, Fyvie, Turriff, AB53 8PQ
Visit, and lose yourself in the glory of Fyvie's landscape and the richness of its past. Ghosts, legends and folklore are all woven into the tapestry of Fyvie's 800-year-old history. Imposing Fyvie Castle is an excellent example of grand Scottish Baronial architecture and is filled with antiquities, armour and oil paintings.
Five successive families owned the castle and tradition claims that each created one of the five towers: Preston, Meldrum, Seton, Gordon and Forbes-Leith. Sadly, this is not the case, but William the Lion was at Fyvie around 1214 and later Robert the Bruce and Charles I were visitors.
Art lovers will appreciate the rich portrait collection, including one of the largest private collections of Raeburns in the world. There's an equally impressive collection of fine furniture, tapestries, arms and armour throughout. Admire the impressive portrait collection, including works by Raeburn, Batoni, Romney, Gainsborough, Opie, Lawrence and Hoppner.
Outside, the 18th-century walled garden has been redeveloped as a garden of Scottish fruits and vegetables. Fyvie Lake is a picturesque landscape feature which supports large numbers of wildfowl. Swans, coots, mallards and moorhens are joined in the winter by greylag geese, tufted ducks and goldeneyes. Ospreys occasionally visit to fish in the loch.
Browse the castle shop for a variety of gifts, and visit the tearoom for a light lunch or a slice of cake and a refreshing cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate.
Fyvie Castle's tearoom is located in the Victorian Kitchens of the house and serves a range of soup and sandwiches, cakes and homebakes, and serve both hot and cold beverages.
There is also seating outdoor for those sunny days.
