What's on in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire this August

We’ve had almost tropical weather for the past few months… will the weather continue and shine over these fantastic events happening in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire this month? Only time will tell. We’ve got lots to look forward to from sporting challenges to beer festivals, the latest festival from Aberdeen Festivals to Highland Games (which even celebrities flock to). Check out the must see events in #beautifulABDN this August:

  • Sessions Beer and Gin Festival [3 – 5 August 2018]

Taking place over three days, Sessions Beer and Gin Festival returns to Hazlehead Park for its second year. Shining the spotlight on local beer and gin producers as well as those from further afield – you can enjoy a tipple in the Tiki Tipi Rum cocktail tent as well as a prosecco and cider container bar. Live music from Noel Gallagher’s High-Flying Carpets, The Capollos and The Little Kicks will provide the soundtrack for the weekend.

  • Highland Games: Aboyne Highland Games [4 August 2018], Ballater Highland Games [9 August 2018] and Lonach Highland Gathering & Games [25 August 2018]

Continuing the Scottish tradition, three Highland Games will take place this August in Aberdeenshire. Start the month with Aboyne Highland Games and Ballater Highland Games and finish with Lonach Highland Gathering & Games - which is arguably one of Scotland’s most prestigious and renowned Highland Games. Famous faces are often spotted at Lonach Highland Gathering & Games including Billy Connolly, Sir Sean Connery, Robin Williams (who even took part in the Games’ four-mile hill run event), Dame Judi Dench, Ewan McGregor, Steve Martin, Richard Madden, Anna Friel, Michael Parkinson and Queen Elizabeth II.

 

  • Beach Ballistic [4 – 5 August 2018]

Usually our beaches are a vision of peace and tranquillity, but not this weekend at Balmedie Country Park. Beach Ballistic – a gruelling obstacle course set against the great dunes with 6k, 16k and 32k runs available. A true test of stamina and determination. Do you have what it takes?

  • Turriff Show [5 – 6 August 2018]

Turriff Show is not only Aberdeenshire’s largest annual event, it is the largest two-day agricultural show in Scotland. Showcasing the best displays of livestock, vintage vehicle display, highland dancing, show jumping and over 300 outdoor and indoor trade stands, this is a great day out for all the family.

  • Banchory Beer Festival [10 – 12 August 2018]

Whether you prefer a craft beer or a handmade fruity cocktail, Banchory Beer Festival is the place to be. Celebrating its 5th year, Banchory Beer Festival is extending its bar and drinks selection by bringing in producers from near and far to this festival. This year’s Sunday session will allow you to bring your children and enjoy the free children’s activities.

  • Johnshaven Fish Festival [11 August 2018]

With over 165 miles of coastline it makes sense that we would love a festival to celebrate the fresh local produce the North Sea provides, enter Johnshaven Fish Festival. Tantalise your taste buds as you enjoy tasty local produce while watching the highland dancers prance to the harmonious sound of the local pipe bands as you eagerly await the highlight of the day the annual Raft Race.

  • Jersey Boys [14 – 23 August 2018]

“Oh what a night…” mid August two-thousand and eighteen (Okay that doesn’t have quite the same ring to it). Join the Jersey Boys at His Majesty’s Theatre (the most northernly date of the UK tour). This smash hit musical tells the real-life story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons that will leave you Beggin’ for more.

  • TechFest [25 August – 22 September 2018]

Aberdeen Festivals’ very own science festival, TechFest is back and celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2018. In June, Techfest announced that ‘The Flying Scotsman’ Graeme Obree will be attending this year’s festival. Keep an eye out on the website for the full festival programme.

  • Simplyhealth Great Aberdeen Run [26 August 2018]

 Challenge yourself to complete the Great Aberdeen Run. Incorporating many of the city's landmarks the scenic running route is great for both runners and spectators alike.
