With its sweeping beach, dramatic coastal scenery and fascinating history, Cruden Bay is one of the most picturesque seaside villages on the Aberdeenshire coast. The village sits beside a two-mile stretch of wide sandy beach framed by dunes and rolling coastline, creating a peaceful setting popular with walkers, golfers, beachgoers and your four-legged friends.

Historically linked to nearby Slains Castle, Cruden Bay grew alongside the harbour at Port Erroll, originally developed by the Earls of Erroll in the late 16th century. The harbour remains part of the village’s coastal character today, offering views across the bay and a glimpse into the area’s long fishing heritage.

Towering above the surrounding landscape is St James the Less Church, opened in 1843 and visible for miles along the coast. The area’s history stretches back much further, with the name “Cruden” believed to derive from the Gaelic Croch Dain, meaning “Slaughter of Danes”, linked to a historic battle fought nearby in 1012.

Today, Cruden Bay is best known for its expansive beach, relaxed seaside atmosphere and spectacular coastal walks. The beach itself stretches beneath the dramatic cliffs leading towards Slains Castle, offering one of the most scenic coastal landscapes in the North-east.
